How the Tip Calculator Works
The tip amount equals the bill total multiplied by the tip percentage divided by 100. The grand total is Bill + Tip. When splitting among multiple people, each person's share is Total / Number of People, and each person's tip share is Tip / Number of People. When the round up option is enabled, each person's total share is rounded up to the next whole number using the ceiling function, which ensures everyone pays at least their exact share and the server always receives the full tip or slightly more.
Step by Step Example
- Dinner bill: 75.00 | Tip rate: 20% | People: 4
- Tip amount = 75.00 x 20 / 100 = 15.00
- Total bill = 75.00 + 15.00 = 90.00
- Per person total = 90.00 / 4 = 22.50
- Per person tip = 15.00 / 4 = 3.75
- With round up enabled: each person pays 23.00 (ceil of 22.50), making the group total 92.00 and the effective tip 17.00 (22.7%)
