How the VAT Formulas Work

To add VAT, multiply the net price by the rate divided by 100. The gross price is the net price plus the VAT amount. To remove VAT from a gross price, divide the gross by (1 + rate / 100) to recover the net, then subtract the net from the gross to isolate the tax. Both directions always produce all three figures so you can verify the math in either direction.

Worked Examples

  1. Add VAT: net price 80, rate 20%. VAT = 80 x 0.20 = 16. Gross = 80 + 16 = 96.
  2. Remove VAT: gross price 120, rate 20%. Net = 120 / 1.20 = 100. VAT = 120 minus 100 = 20.
  3. Add VAT at 5%: net 200. VAT = 200 x 0.05 = 10. Gross = 210.
  4. Remove VAT at 25%: gross 500. Net = 500 / 1.25 = 400. VAT = 100.

Important Note

VAT rates differ by country and by product or service category. This calculator applies whatever rate you enter and does not enforce country specific rules, reduced rates, exemptions, or registration thresholds. Always confirm the correct rate with your local tax authority or a qualified accountant before relying on these figures for compliance.

Add VAT vs. Remove VAT

Use Add VAT when you have a net price and need the customer facing total
Use Add VAT when building a quote or invoice from cost price inputs
Use Remove VAT when you received a gross invoice and need the net for accounting
Applying Add VAT twice to the same amount compounds the tax incorrectly
Using Remove VAT on an already net price produces a figure lower than the true net
This calculator does not replace official tax advice or compliance guidance
