The Challenge
Peru requires 40×45mm passport photos (not 2×2 inches as many sites incorrectly claim) with white background, no glasses, and specific head positioning. Using wrong dimensions = automatic rejection at consulate. Professional photo services charge S/15–30 or $10–20 abroad.
Peru passport photos are NOT 2×2 inches
- Correct size: 40×45mm (4.0×4.5 cm) — per official consulado.pe
- Many websites incorrectly list 2×2 inches (51×51mm) — this is the US passport format
- Submitting 2×2 inch or 35×45mm photos will be rejected at Peruvian consulates
- Peru visa photos use a different size (35×45mm) — see our separate Peru visa photo tool
- Always verify with your specific consulate as requirements may vary by location
Peruvian passport photo requirements (Migraciones)
The Superintendencia Nacional de Migraciones issues biometric passports to Peruvian citizens. When applying at a consulate abroad, you must submit 2 colour photographs measuring 4.0×4.5 cm (40×45mm) with white background and no glasses. Within Peru, Migraciones offices take your photo digitally during the appointment — no printed photos needed for domestic applications. However, consulates abroad require physical prints. The photo must show your face from the front with a natural expression (not smiling), from head to mid-chest, with hair behind the ears and no head accessories, hairbands, or ornaments.
Peru passport photo requirements – will your photo be accepted?
- 40×45mm dimensions (4.0×4.5 cm) — NOT 2×2 inches or 35×45mm
- Pure white background, no shadows or patterns
- Head height 34.5mm from crown to chin, with 4.5mm margin at top
- Taken within last 6 months reflecting current appearance
- Colour photo — black and white not accepted
- Natural expression, mouth closed, no smiling with teeth
- Both eyes open and clearly visible
- No glasses — no exceptions unless medically essential and non-obstructive
- No hats, headbands, hair accessories, or ornaments (religious headwear allowed)
- Hair behind ears — ears should be visible
- Photo from head to mid-chest (medio tórax)
- Even lighting, no shadows on face or background
- Matte finish paper (acabado mate)
- No digital retouching, filters, or beauty mode
- No piercings on face
Common rejection reasons at Peruvian consulates
- Wrong dimensions — using 2×2 inch (US format) or 35×45mm (European format) instead of 40×45mm
- Wearing glasses (no glasses allowed, period)
- Facial piercings visible in photo
- Hair covering ears or forehead
- Headbands, hairclips, or decorative accessories visible
- Smiling or unnatural expression
- Shadows on face or background
- Photo not showing mid-chest area (cropped too tight)
- Glossy paper instead of required matte finish
- Photo older than 6 months
- Low resolution or blurry image
- White clothing blending into white background
How to print Peru passport photos at home
- Paper: Use matte photo paper (acabado mate required). Glossy paper will be rejected by consulate.
- Printer settings: Select highest quality, 100% scale (no 'fit to page'), colour mode.
- Paper size: Choose 4R (102×152mm) for 4–6 photos, or A4 for larger sheets.
- Cutting: Use sharp scissors or paper trimmer. Cut precisely along grey guide lines.
- Size verification: Final photos must measure exactly 40×45mm. Use ruler to confirm — this is critical as 40×45mm is a non-standard size.
- Alternative: Print at local photo shop. Specify '4.0 por 4.5 centímetros, fondo blanco, acabado mate'.
- Tip: Many photo shops outside Peru are unfamiliar with 40×45mm — bring printed dimensions.
Domestic vs consulate passport applications
Within Peru, passport applications are processed at Migraciones offices. You book an appointment online, pay S/98.60, and Migraciones staff take your digital photo on-site — no printed photos needed. Passports are typically issued the same day. For Peruvians living abroad, applications go through consulates (consulado.pe) which require 2 printed colour photos in 40×45mm format plus your DNI and previous passport. Processing at consulates takes up to 48 hours where local printing is available, or up to 3 weeks if sent to Lima.
Peru passport photo vs Peru visa photo — different sizes
Peruvian passport photos and Peru visa application photos use different dimensions. Passport photos for Peruvian citizens are 40×45mm (4.0×4.5 cm) per Migraciones specifications. Visa photos for foreigners applying to visit Peru follow the standard 35×45mm format used by most embassies. Do not interchange these formats — using 35×45mm for a Peruvian passport application will result in rejection. If you need visa photos for travel TO Peru, use our separate Peru visa photo tool.
Good vs bad Peru passport photo examples
Taking passport photos of babies and children
- Lay baby on plain white sheet or blanket on floor.
- Photograph from directly above with face centred.
- Use natural window light — avoid flash and shadows.
- Only the child should be visible — no hands, toys, or pacifiers.
- Same 40×45mm dimensions apply as for adults.
- Children must have a current DNI to apply for passport.
- Natural expression acceptable for young children.
Cost comparison: DIY vs professional
- Photo studio in Peru: S/10–20 (approximately $3–6 USD)
- Photo studio in US/Europe: $10–20 for Peruvian passport format
- Peruvian consulate in US: photos may be available on-site (varies by location)
- This tool: Free — download and print at home or at photo shop
- Home printing cost: $0.25–0.50 per sheet (matte paper + ink)
- Warning: Many non-Peruvian photo services don't know the 40×45mm format — verify before paying
DNI photo requirements (different from passport)
The Peruvian DNI (Documento Nacional de Identidad) issued by RENIEC uses a slightly different photo size: 35×43mm. For DNI applications, RENIEC offices take your photo digitally on-site — you don't need printed photos for domestic DNI processing. For DNI applications at consulates abroad, check with your specific consulate whether they require printed photos and in what dimensions. Do not use 40×45mm passport photos for DNI applications — the dimensions are different.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size are Peru passport photos?
Peruvian passport photos must be 40×45mm (4.0×4.5 cm). This is NOT 2×2 inches (51×51mm) as many websites incorrectly state. The 2×2 inch format is for US passports. Using wrong dimensions will result in rejection at Peruvian consulates.
Are Peru passport photos the same as US passport photos?
No. Peru uses 40×45mm (rectangular). US uses 2×2 inches / 51×51mm (square). They are completely different formats. Peruvians in the US applying for a Peruvian passport must use 40×45mm, not 2×2 inch.
Can I wear glasses in Peru passport photos?
No. Glasses are not allowed in Peruvian passport photos. Remove all eyewear. This applies even to prescription glasses — no exceptions unless medically essential and they don't obstruct your eyes.
Do I need printed photos for a Peruvian passport?
Within Peru: No. Migraciones takes your photo digitally at the appointment. At consulates abroad: Yes, 2 printed colour photos in 40×45mm on matte paper are required.
What paper type for Peru passport photos?
Matte finish (acabado mate) is required. Glossy paper will be rejected by Peruvian consulates. Specify matte when printing at home or at photo services.
Can I use Peru passport photos for DNI applications?
No. Peruvian passport photos are 40×45mm. DNI photos are 35×43mm — different dimensions. Within Peru, RENIEC takes your photo digitally. Check with your consulate for overseas DNI applications.
Are facial piercings allowed in Peru passport photos?
No. Facial piercings must be removed for Peruvian passport photos. This is explicitly stated in Migraciones photo requirements.
How much does a Peruvian passport cost?
Within Peru: S/98.60 paid at Banco de la Nación or págalo.pe. Consulate fees vary by location. The passport is valid for up to 5 years and can be renewed once.
How recent must Peru passport photos be?
Within the last 6 months. If your appearance has changed significantly (major weight change, facial surgery), you must take a new photo regardless of age.
Where can I print 40×45mm photos outside Peru?
Many photo services outside Peru don't stock this size. Print at home on matte paper and cut to exact dimensions, or specify '4.0 by 4.5 centimetres on matte paper' at a photo shop. Always verify the final measurement with a ruler.
